We are hiring a Full-Time Permanent Distribution Engineer position working out of Edmonton, AB.

 

As the Engineer, Distribution, you use your engineering know-how to complete overhead and underground electric distribution design, estimating, and act as a liaison with customers. Additionally, you have accountability for the interpretation and authentication of engineering designs, standards and specifications that you, or other engineering personnel working under your direct supervision, have prepared. You act as a mentor to designers; this includes coaching and identifying development needs for the team in alignment with your manager.

 

You have a knack for numbers and their significance, as you will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of optimal results against appropriate performance metrics while establishing, monitoring, measuring and reporting on performance metrics related to Franchise Engineering projects. This includes analyzing, identifying and responding to issues impacting optimal performance. You are a problem solver and a team player. You prioritize communication and collaboration to support a productive and positive environment.

 

This position may be eligible for EPCOR’s hybrid work program.

What you’d be responsible for

  • Authenticating engineering designs, standards and specifications; this includes recommending broader modifications and new approaches to designs.
  • Completing distribution designs, ordering material, work order issuance and approval, as well as field inspection and contractor management during construction and maintenance activities.
  • Assessing distribution engineering utility best practices in engineering design, work methods, materials, equipment, tools and instruments to move distribution engineering further towards an industry leading position in work practices and a safety focused culture.
  • Developing, implementing and reviewing engineering processes to ensure compliance to policies, standards, regulatory requirements and ensuring mitigation of risks.
  • Providing professional engineering expertise to support technical and technology decisions related to design and construction of distribution utility infrastructure.
  • Resolving difficulties with design, ensuring designers have the technical skills required to perform their work functions, developing and delivering engineering training to junior staff in areas of deficiency.
  • Recommending new approaches to designs, recognizing and encouraging continuous improvement throughout the design team.
  • Identifying the necessary budget requirements for the provision of engineering resources, process improvements, technology upgrades, design improvements related to improved safety and reliability and the acquisition and talent pool development of optimal human resources.
  • Performing and review of electrical and civil calculations including pulling calculations, clearances due to sag and tension of aerial wires, pole strength calculations and transformer sizing.

What’s required to be successful

  • A degree in Engineering or a diploma in Civil or Electrical Engineering from a recognized post-secondary institute
  • With a degree in Engineering we require:
    • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.),
  • With a diploma in Civil or Electrical Engineering we require:
    • Professional Licensee P.L.(Eng.) with the ability to review, approve and stamp Electrical Distribution System designs
  • 5+ years of progressively responsible experience in electrical distribution systems with demonstrated increased responsibility
  • In-depth knowledge of:
    • Aerial and Underground Distribution system design and construction methods, procedures, work practices and techniques.
    • Alberta Electric Utility Code and CSA Standard requirements.
    • Aerial and Underground Distribution system engineering standards, material specifications and engineered guidelines.
  • Experience in:
    • Designing complex distribution utility construction projects with increasing responsibility.
    • Planning and executing new initiatives and implementing new processes.
    • The design and construction of on-site distribution engineering projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • Work effectively as part of a larger team within a dynamic environment.
    • Develop, nurture and manage external and internal relationships.
    • Understand and manage complex budgets relative to this area of responsibility.
    • Execute the annual capital plan for Distribution.
    • Show strong decision making skills.
  • High level of competency with computer software. In particular: Microsoft Office, Electric Office or other GIS systems, IVARA and/or other work Management tools such as MS Project.
